But the fact is that sexting is something kids will find out about at some point. This is why it’s important to talk about sexting with your child early, so they have the information they need to make healthy decisions. Sexting has been promoted further by several direct messaging applications that are available on smartphones. The difference between using these applications and traditional texting is that content is transmitted over the Internet or a data plan, allowing anyone with Internet access to participate. Snapchat appeals to teens because it allows users to send photos for a maximum of ten seconds before they disappear. Many sending photos over Snapchat believe these photos will disappear without consequences, so they feel more secure about sending them.

These practices would help boys enhance their social capital and be more accepted within their peer group. This reality echoes the sexual double standard that seems to govern this phenomenon (Wood et al., 2015; Symons et al., 2018). In terms of gender differences, the results obtained suggest that the emotional impact behind both types of sexting is similar in boys and girls. From this perspective, it would be interesting to qualitatively analyze what interpretation is made of the cited pressure. The legal, social, and lifelong consequences that can result from current North Carolina laws governing sexting behavior appear to be too severe for minors.
- It uses social theater with young people as preventive medical care, focusing on peer education through media and digital literacy.
- The report found that peer pressure is also of concern since 23% of teen girls and 24% of teen boys said they were pressured by their friends to send or post explicit content.
- In terms of sexting, the legal system can charge a minor with a felony for producing, possessing, and sharing a sext, regardless of whether the sext portrays the minor in question or another minor engaging in sexual activity.
- Carol Queen, Ph.D., sex educator and staff sexologist at Good Vibrations, tells Bustle that sexting is absolutely OK in a relationship if the circumstances are right.
- Leave room for your child to ask questions, talk to them about affirmative consent, and provide resources that will help them think things through on their own.

Two under-studied elements in this regard relate to social competence and friendship; however, the association between sexting, social competence and friendship quality is difficult to determine based on previous literature alone. As such, this study performed two hierarchical regression models to identify which one best explains the relationships between these variables. Results suggest that Model 2, where social competence and sexting were predictors of friendship quality, explained more variance (25%) than Model 1, where social competence and friendship quality predicted sexting behaviour (16%). These results, as well as prevalence rates for sending sexts are discussed in detail. Recommendations for future research that considers the role of the peer group to understanding adolescent sexting are also outlined.
- It could also be a man and woman who just met and are mutually attracted to one another.
- The category system resulting from categorizing the areas of action is shown in Table 1.
- While this study proves that adult texting is quite popular, sexting among minors has actually decreased between 2008 and 2013.
- There’s some evidence that sexting can make a romantic or sexual relationship stronger.
- To make the whole sexting experience exciting, one must draw from personal experiences and try to personalize them and not copy from the how to sext templates.
Our previous research has shown that items that are more sensitive in nature, such as sexting, are more prone to underreporting in the presence of a telephone interviewer compared with online [75]. Hence, the rates presented in this paper may be a more accurate reflection of sexting prevalence. Sexting prevalence rates among adolescents vary according to the criteria used to define the phenomenon, the age of the participants, the time range and measuring instrument, among others (Barrense-Dias et al., 2017). A first broad differentiation of sexting behaviours can be made between active sexting (sending or forwarding) and passive sexting (receiving directly from the creator or receiving content forwarded by third-parties) (Barrense-Dias et al., 2017).
Its impact, which is essentially “active,” seems to more strongly correlate with typical behaviors of desire and curiosity about new experiences, much like the sexual experiences that play out during this developmental stage. The prevalence of sexting among youths is generally unknown, reported estimates vary widely from 1.3% to 60%. What complicates the issue is that different teenage populations often have individualized definitions of what sexting is. Some states have adopted laws that prescribe penalties aimed specifically at teenagers or adolescents who send such images. These laws make the penalties for teen sexting less severe than if an adult would send similar photos to an underage person.
For example, some researchers only examined the sending of nude or nearly nude images, whereas others asked participants how often they had received sexually suggestive words. In practical terms, this meant that sexting could be defined as anything from sexy talk, such as suggesting sexual activity or making sexualized comments, to more explicit displays of sexuality, such as sending nude or nearly nude photos. For example, some researchers used anonymous online surveys, and others used telephone interviews on landlines. These differences led to very dissimilar prevalence rates of sexting, ranging from a low of about 2.5 percent for sending sexual photos (among 10- to 17-year-olds) to a high of about 80 percent for receiving sexual texts (among young adults). First, the study examined cross-sectional associations between sexting and psychosocial health, so no causal inferences can be made. Third, although the study examined a range of sexting forms and psychosocial health, the included variables were not exhaustive.

Pictures can be saved in phones, on computers, or stored online forever. They can be shown or sent to other people with one click, even by accident. People can take a screenshot of the picture and distribute it without your knowledge. Although parents will not typically be held liable for children who choose to send sext messages, parents may become liable for negligence or child neglect in some cases. Additionally, parents may become liable for not reporting instances of criminal sexting.
They may want to consensually exchange suggestive pictures and messages for both to enjoy at his or her discretion. Having or having had a romantic/sexual partner in the last three months predicts involvement across all sexting behaviours for both boys and girls. This coincides with previous studies reporting how sexting occurs more often between desired and actual sexual and/or romantic partners (Wood et al., 2015). In Beckmeyer et al.’s (2019) study, 84.1% of the adolescents participating in sexting were in a romantic relationship. Thus, sexting can not only lead to negative outcomes, such as the future dissemination of non-consensual sexual content, but it can also have a positive impact, such as strengthening a romantic relationship (Englander, 2019).
